  1. The War Through the Generations Reading Challenge 2010  will be focusing on the Vietnam war.
  2. It appears that you can still read and post reviews about WWII.
  3. The challenge will run from January 1, 2010, through December 31, 2010.

This important challenge is hosted by Anna from Diary of an Eccentric and Serena from Savvy Verse & Wit. It has become very popular, has multiple daily, as well as access to an rss feed and emailed updates!

This sounds intriguing, Shellie. I don't know if it would fit, but one of my books (that I wrote) begins with the characters protesting the Vietnam War, and references to this come up occasionally throughout the book.

And in "Chasing Stardust," one of the characters flees to Canada to avoid the War.

Laurel -
Thanks, I will ask Anna if that is ok...

Is there some sort of historical setting to go along with it? or is it just mentioned?

"How many a man has dated a new era in his life from the reading of a book"

What a superb quote.

Shellie: Thanks for joining the Vietnam War reading challenge. I've got you listed on the participants page.

I will check out your good reads shelf to make sure we have those books listed on the site.

Also, sounds to me like Laurel's book would be a good fit if one of the main characters flees to Canada to escape the draft.

Glad to see you'll be joining us!

I think Serena's handled the question about Laurel's book, but feel free to shoot me an e-mail if need be. :)

Serena -
Thanks a bunch and Laurel will be happy about that too!

Anna -
I do have a question and not sure if you have clicked the email response box for this thread... so I will ask for both ways:

I noted that it looks like the WWII challenge is still going to happen as well? More info please.... Do you need to sign up for both or is one connected to the other? Since I know I will invariably read books with WWII connections. :)

Thanks!

Shellie,

The WWII challenge ends on Dec. 31. We'll be revisiting that war at some point down the road. At that point, our focus will shift to the Vietnam War, but we will continue to maintain and add to the WWII recommended reading and book review lists.

Basically, our plan is to focus on a different war each year.

I hope that answers your questions, but if now, I did subscribe to the comments, so ask away!

Thanks for addressing this, Shellie. As for settings...some of the characters in "Miles to Go" engage in protests against Vietnam while they're attending Sacramento State University...and some of the characters work (in Sacramento) for a counseling group to help young men legally avoid the war.

In "Chasing Stardust," there are war protesters on campus during the book...and then later, the primary character learns about the character who escaped to Canada...but after the fact, when he returns.

Laurel -
You betcha!

Miles to go sounds great too... next on my list.

Perhaps well get both done for this challenge. :)

Anna also noted that she was going to add the books in my Goodread's Vietnam war to the listing on the challenge site.

I will add both of your books to that list so they can also be added by other readers in the challenge.
