Lina should be spending her days with books, but the Iron War has changed everything. The strongholds are now a refuge, and the people Lina once counted on no longer have time for her, so she spends her days exploring the hidden tunnels and passages of her home. The strongholds are vast and old, with twisting paths, forgotten rooms, and collapsed chambers, some of them containing objects that have been lost and forgotten even by the archivists.

And in one of the forgotten chambers, Lina discovers a secret.

Hidden deep in a cavern is a half-buried airship like nothing she has ever seen before. She’s determined to dig it out and restore it. But Lina needs help, and she doesn’t know anyone she can trust with her secret.

Then she meets Ozben, a mysterious boy who has a secret of his own—a secret that’s so dangerous it could change the course of the Iron War and the world of Solace forever.

Giveaway: The Last Days of Magic by Mark Tompkins

The Last Days of Magic - Mark Tomkins

We have a giveaway for THE LAST DAYS OF MAGIC by Mark Tompkins for US residents, courtesy of Penguin Random House.

In addition to the book for the giveaway the winner will receive a promotional tarot card set pictured below. All packaged up in a gold envelope.

Fun stuff!

What’s even better is this giveaway is attached to the Leap Into Books Giveaway Hop where you can enter other bookish giveaways by linking on the blogs’ titles listed at the bottom of this post. The hop runs from Feb. 28 till March 7 and is hosted by BookHounds.

Here’s more about the book:

What became of magic in the world? Who needed to do away with it, and for what reasons? Drawing on myth, legend, fairy tales, and Biblical mysteries, The Last Days of Magic brilliantly imagines answers to these questions, sweeping us back to a world where humans and magical beings co-exist as they had for centuries.

Leap Into Books Hop 2016

Aisling, a goddess in human form, was born to rule both domains and—with her twin, Anya—unite the Celts with the powerful faeries of the Middle Kingdom. But within medieval Ireland interests are divided, and far from its shores greater forces are mustering. Both England and Rome have a stake in driving magic from the Emerald Isle. Jordan, the Vatican commander tasked with vanquishing the remnants of otherworldly creatures from a disenchanted Europe, has built a career on such plots. But increasingly he finds himself torn between duty and his desire to understand the magic that has been forbidden.

Last Days of Magic and Tarrot Cards giveaway

As kings prepare, exorcists gather, and divisions widen between the warring clans of Ireland, Aisling and Jordan must come to terms with powers given and withheld, while a world that can still foster magic hangs in the balance. Loyalties are tested, betrayals sown, and the coming war will have repercussions that ripple centuries later, in today’s world—and in particular for a young graduate student named Sara Hill.

The Last Days of Magic introduces us to unforgettable characters who grapple with quests for power, human frailty, and the longing for knowledge that has been made taboo. Mark Tompkins has crafted a remarkable tale—a feat of world-building that poses astonishing and resonant answers to epic questions.

Giveaway: PLANETFALL by Emma Newman and Gratitude Hop

Planetfall - Emma Newman

We have a giveaway for PLANETFALL by Emma Newman. It’s science fiction. We have one copy to send to a US address.

This giveaway is attached to the Gratitude Giveaways Hop. The hops lasts from November 15 to 30. Please be a follower to enter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’s a bit more about the book via the publicist:
A breathtaking combination of psychological suspense and science fiction, there are few novels like Emma Newman’s PLANETFALL. Beautifully crafted and heartbreaking, it’s a thought provoking look at the lengths people will go to keep secrets through the chronicle of a woman’s struggle against mental illness and fear of losing everything she loves in an alien landscape.
Renata Ghali and a small team braved the unknown and followed Le Suh-Mi to a new world. More than twenty-two years have passed and a colony has been formed at the base of a strange alien structure where Suh-Mi resides in isolation. As the colony’s 3-D printer, Ren creates the tools necessary for human survival while harboring a devastating secret. Then a stranger appears, far too young to have been part of the first planetfall. And he bears a remarkable resemblance to Suh-Mi.
Emma Newman is the author of the Split Worlds series and has been nominated for two British Fantasy Awards for her work. In addition to writing, Newman is the host of the Hugo Award-nominated podcast Tea and Jeopardy which features “tea, cake, geekery and mild peril.”
A shocking magical assault on her home reveals to Brianna that her father, High King Liu of the Fae, is under attack. With the help of her gargoyle, Pug, her friend David, and Angelo, a police detective who doesn't believe in magic, Brianna recovers what was stolen from her and becomes an unwilling potential heir to the throne.
Giveaway: TIDES OF MARITINIA by Warren Hammond and Gratitude Giveaways Hop
Tides of Maritinia - Warren Hammond
We have a giveaway for TIDES OF MARITINIA by Warren Hammond. It’s “a spy novel with a science fiction twist”  for international or US residents - depending on your preference for book format.
The giveaway is international in its ebook format. However, if you are in the US and win you can opt for a paper copy but it will be delivered in January since the paper copy will not be available until then.
This giveaway is also attached to the 5th Annual Gratitude Giveaways Hop. It’s hosted by I Am A Reader Not A Writer. You can find the other blogs that you can link to for bookish giveaways at the bottom of this post.
Here’s the publisher’s description:
Maritinia is at the far edge of the Empire, a planet with little economic value in the Sire’s sphere of influence.
And it’s just rebelled.
The people of Maritinia believe the Empire will not care that they’ve broken free. But the Empire is built on the belief that if an insignificant planet can revolt, then other, more important planets might follow suit.
So the Empire sends an agent to Maritinia with a mission: assassinate and replace one of the conspirators, and do enough to sow discord that when the soldiers do land, any opposition will be quickly crushed.
Thus Jakob finds himself immersed in the inner circle of the madman who led the rebellion. A raw recruit with only his political officer—a separate consciousness inserted into his brain—to speak with, Jakob is out of his element as an operative. And while he falls deeper into the conspiracy, he begins to question everything: the despotic admiral in charge of the coup, his feelings for a native woman, and—most troublingly—whether he still agrees with the will of the Sire.
In TIDES OF MARITINIA, author Warren Hammond thrusts readers into Maritinia, a far-flung planet on the outskirts of the omnipresent Empire. Maritinia is a planet of little consequence; its people are purposefully deprived of technology as a means of government control, its economy rests precariously on the export of kelp… and a group of rebels have just staged a coup.
In spite of the planet’s status, the Empire needs to regain control. Naturally, they send Jakob Bryce, a hapless paper-pusher who has somehow become a secret agent of the Empire, with a simple mission: assassinate and replace one of the rebel conspirators, immerse himself in the inner circle of “New” Maritinia, and sow enough discord to bring down the unstable rebellion and make way for Empire troops to come in and clean house.
Hammond expertly constructs a vibrant world in TIDES OF MARITINIA, filled with brilliant detail, colorful characters, and a layered universe of class, politics, religion and warfare.
Harper Voyager Impulse | Ebook | 12/02/2014
Warren Hammond is the author of three books in the KOP series—KOP, Ex-KOP, and KOP Killer—which were hailed by The Denver Post as “an addictively readable mix of hard-boiled detective and science fiction.” Hammond grew up in the Hudson River Valley of New York State. Upon obtaining his teaching degree from the University at Albany, he moved to Colorado and settled in Denver, where he can often be found typing away at one of the local coffee shops. He lives there with his wife.
Giveaway: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories by Washington Irving
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories - Washington Irving
Giveaway for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories by Washington Irving. We have one copy for a US or Canadian address. And we also have The Spooktacular Giveaway Hop attached at the bottom for those of you interested in other bookish giveaway offers.
Although several of the stories within The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories are perfect for the season, many of the stories are not spooky at all but serve to offer glimpses into another time during the past.
Here’s the publisher’s description of this short story collection:
The timeless collection that introduced Rip Van Winkle, Ichabod Crane, and the Headless Horseman.
Perhaps the marker of a true mythos is when the stories themselves overshadow their creator. Originally published under a pseudonym as The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories gave America its own haunted mythology. This collection of larger-than-life tales contains Washington Irving’s best-known literary inventions—Ichabod Crane, the Headless Horseman, and Rip Van Winkle—that continue to capture our imaginations today.
Giveaway: The Bloodbound by Erin Lindsey
The Bloodbound by Erin Lindsey
We have one copy of The Bloodbound by Erin Lindsey for one US address as part of the Stuck in a Good Book Blog Hop. Hosted by I Am A Reader Not A Writer and Stuck in Books, the hop runs from September 20th to the 25th.
Please be a reader or follower of Layers of Thought to enter this contest. For more on how to follow see the information below the book’s description.
Here’s a bit more about this fantasy novel:
Of all those in the King of Alden’s retinue, the bloodbinders are the most prized. The magic they wield can forge invaluable weapons, ones that make soldiers like Lady Alix Black unerringly lethal. However, the bloodbinders’ powers can do so much more—and so much worse…
A cunning and impetuous scout, Alix only wishes to serve quietly on the edges of the action. But when the king is betrayed by his own brother and left to die at the hands of attacking Oridian forces, she winds up single-handedly saving her sovereign.
Suddenly, she is head of the king’s personal guard, an honor made all the more dubious by the king’s exile from his own court. Surrounded by enemies, Alix must help him reclaim his crown, all the while attempting to repel the relentless tide of invaders led by the Priest, most feared of Oridia’s lords.
But while Alix’s king commands her duty, both he and a fellow scout lay claim to her heart. And when the time comes, she may need to choose between the two men who need her most…
Erin Lindsey likes her stories the way she likes her chocolate: dark, exotic, and with a hint of bitterness. She has visited fifty countries on four continents, and brought a little something back from each of them to press inside the pages of her books. Erin Lindsey is also the pseudonym for E.L. Tettensor, whose Darkwalker series is published by Roc.
Giveaway: Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Thomas Sweterlitsch
TOMORROW AND TOMORROW - Thomas Sweterlitsch
We have one copy of Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Thomas Sweterlitsch for a US or Canadian address. This giveaway is also part of the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop which is live from July 2nd to 9th.  Please see below for more information about the hop.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow is a futuristic and technological noir thriller which is about to be published by Penguin.
Here’s the publisher’s blurb for the book:
A decade has passed since the city of Pittsburgh was reduced to ash.
While the rest of the world has moved on, losing itself in the noise of a media-glutted future, survivor John Dominic Blaxton remains obsessed with the past. Grieving for his wife and unborn child who perished in the blast, Dominic relives his lost life by immersing in the Archive—a fully interactive digital reconstruction of Pittsburgh, accessible to anyone who wants to visit the places they remember and the people they loved.
Dominic investigates deaths recorded in the Archive to help close cases long since grown cold, but when he discovers glitches in the code surrounding a crime scene—the body of a beautiful woman abandoned in a muddy park that he’s convinced someone tried to delete from the Archive—his cycle of grief is shattered.
With nothing left to lose, Dominic tracks the murder through a web of deceit that takes him from the darkest corners of the Archive to the ruins of the city itself, leading him into the heart of a nightmare more horrific than anything he could have imagined.
About The Book of Life:
The highly anticipated finale to the #1 New York Times bestselling trilogy that began with A Discovery of Witches
After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness’s enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.
With more than one million copies sold in the United States and appearing in thirty-eight foreign editions, A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night have landed on all of the major bestseller lists and garnered rave reviews from countless publications. Eagerly awaited by Harkness’s legion of fans, The Book of Life brings this superbly written series to a deeply satisfying close.
A-Discovery-of-Witches---Deborah-Har
Not included in the giveaway but in case your interested here’s the publisher’s description of the first book in the series - A Discovery of Witches:
Deborah Harkness’s sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches, has brought her into the spotlight and galvanized fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and a descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782, deep in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont.
A-Shadow-of-Night---Deborah-Harkness[1]
And for the second - Shadow of Night:
J. K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Rice—only a few writers capture the imagination the way that Deborah Harkness has with her New York Times–bestselling All Souls trilogy. A Discovery of Witches introduces reluctant witch Diana Bishop, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.
Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.
I am giving away one paperback copy of a terrific and award-winning book which I rated a rare 5 stars. It’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. I absolutely loved it.
It’s historical fantasy set in England during the Napoleonic Wars and features an incredible fairy that readers will not soon forget called – the man with the thistle down hair. Please read my review for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by linking on this text.
Excitingly the book is also being made into a a seven-part British drama television series to be shown on BBC One and is planned to be released sometime in 2014. I am very excited.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Two magicians shall appear in England. The first shall fear me; the second shall long to behold me ...
The year is 1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon, and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation's past. But scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell whose displays of magic send a thrill through the country. Proceeding to London, he raises a beautiful woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French. Yet the cautious, fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange. Young, handsome and daring, Strange is the very opposite of Norrell. So begins a dangerous battle between these two great men which overwhelms the one between England and France. And their own obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts are going to cause more trouble than they can imagine.
The House at the End of Hope Street by Menna Van Praag
A magical debut about an enchanted house that offers refuge to women in their time of need
Distraught that her academic career has stalled, Alba is walking through her hometown of Cambridge, England, when she finds herself in front of a house she’s never seen before, 11 Hope Street. A beautiful older woman named Peggy greets her and invites her to stay, on the house’s usual conditions: she has ninety-nine nights to turn her life around. With nothing left to lose, Alba takes a chance and moves in.
She soon discovers that this is no ordinary house. Past residents have included Virginia Woolf and Dorothy Parker, who, after receiving the assistance they needed, hung around to help newcomers—literally, in talking portraits on the wall. As she escapes into this new world, Alba begins a journey that will heal her wounds—and maybe even save her life.
Filled with a colorful and unforgettable cast of literary figures, The House at the End of Hope Street is a charming, whimsical novel of hope and feminine wisdom that is sure to appeal to fans of Jasper Fforde and especially Sarah Addison Allen.
Moth and Spark - Anne Leonard
Moth and Spark by Anne Leonard
A prince with a quest. A commoner with mysterious powers. And dragons that demand to be freed—at any cost.
Prince Corin has been chosen to free the dragons from their bondage to the Empire, but dragons aren’t big on directions. They have given him some of their power, but none of their knowledge. No one, not the dragons nor their riders, is even sure what keeps the dragons in the Empire’s control. Tam, sensible daughter of a well-respected doctor, had no idea before she arrived in the capital that she is a Seer, gifted with visions. When the two run into each other (quite literally) in the library, sparks fly and Corin impulsively asks Tam to dinner. But it’s not all happily ever after. Never mind that the prince isn’t allowed to marry a commoner: war is coming to Caithen. Torn between Corin’s quest to free the dragons and his duty to his country, the lovers must both figure out how to master their powers in order to save Caithen. With a little help from a village of secret wizards and a rogue dragonrider, they just might pull it off.
Giveaway: Nightlife by Matthew Quinn Martin (and Spooktacular Hop)
Nightlife
Giveaway for Nightlife by Matthew Quinn Martin and information on the Spooktacular Giveaway Hop, where tons of blogs offer ways to enter and win bookish prizes. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the fall season than with winning books.
For this hop we have a copy of Nightlife for one US or Canadian address. Below is the description from the book jacket:
For centuries an ancient evil has slept beneath the streets of New Harbor. This Halloween, it wakes up.
An action-packed debut horror novel from talented new writer Matthew Quinn Martin, Nightlife pits a feisty bartender and a mysterious loner against bloodthirsty terrors as alluring as they are deadly.
Nightclub bartender and serial heartbreaker Beth Becker might be a cynic. But when her best friend goes missing Halloween night, Beth knows it’s up to her to find out what happened.
Her quest will take her on an odyssey through the crumbling city of New Harbor, Connecticut. Along the way she meets a homeless prophet warning of something he calls the “Night Angel”—a bloodthirsty creature that feeds on the forgotten. And she will form an unlikely bond with a hunted stranger who knows all too well what stalks the streets at night.
He tells Beth the hideous truth about the nightmare creatures that have haunted mankind’s imagination for eons—creatures the world calls vampires. Together they are the only hope for New Harbor, but to defeat what lurks in the shadows they’ll have to conquer something far stronger than fear—their own desires.
